Abstract: This research investigates the chemical reactivity and properties of Cobalt(II) metal complexes coordinated to a novel tripodal, tri-guanidine ligand, Triguan (L). The cobalt(II) ([Co(II)LOAc]OAc) complex was successfully synthesized and a solvent system was determined for recrystallization. In addition, both the acetate and tetraphenylborate (BPh4) counterions were effectively substituted in the Co(II) species and were isolated and purified. The [Co(II)](BPh4)2 complex demonstrates a rare four-coordinate trigonal monopyramidal geometry, leaving an empty apical binding site. Titrations of [CoL](BPh4)2 with various anions were conducted to test the relative binding ability of different substrates in the apical site. Equilibrium constants and binding affinities for different anions are calculated and reported.
