Abstract: Two cobalt(II) complexes were studied in this research: [CoL]BPh4]2 and [CoLOAc][OAc], where L = tris(N’,N”-­‐diisopropylguanidinyl-­‐2-­‐ethyl)amine (DIG₃Tren). DIG₃Tren is a guanidine based, tetradentate, tripodal ligand that binds to metals as an uncharged ligand. DIG₃Tren was modestly purified with a kugelrohr. [CoLOAc][OAc] has an acetate as its auxiliary ligand, while [CoL][BPh4]2 has an empty auxiliary ligand binding site. The two complexes have distinct UV-­‐Vis spectra that switch in certain solvents. In acetonitrile, the spectrum of [CoL][BPh4]2 appears as a combination of the two spectra; this spectra changes with temperature. Titrations with various anions and [CoL][BPh4]2 in ethanol showed that acetate and thiocyanate (SCN) bind well, with SCN binding more tightly. These binding constants were calculated. The reactivity of [CoLOAc][OAc] and [CoL][BPh4]2 with H2O2 was tested, showing evidence that this reaction may have created a relatively short-­lived Co(III) peroxide complex with m/z = 615.
