Abstract: I report in this thesis my investigation into the properties of the tetradentate tripodal ligand trist(N',N"-diisopropylguanidinyl-2-ethyl)amine (DIG₃Tren) as it binds to different metal centers. The zinc(II), copper(II), and copper(I) complexes are synthesized, purified, and characterized by various methods, including 1H NMR, ESI-MS, and cyclic voltammetry. The zinc(II) complexes with different auxiliary anions exhibit temperature-dependent dynamical properties that can be detected with 1H NMR. The copper complexes show stability in the cuprous and cupric form. The cuprous complex exhibits irreversible reactivity with dioxygen, and ESI-MS evidence supports dioxygen incorporation into the ligand under certain conditions.
