Abstract: This research is designed to continue a set of synthesis of novel monooxygenase active site mimics based on a complex between a cobalt (II) ion and the urea-based bidentate ligand 1-tert-butyl-3-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)urea, H2L. The urea group on the ligand is predicted to stabilize dioxygen binding to the metal ion through hydrogen bonding in the second coordination sphere. Four to four and four to three ligand to metal complexes have already been synthesized. This thesis reports on the synthesis of a novel crystalline three to one, H2L ligand to cobalt (II) metal complex. The research also presents the first known crystallographic model for the three to one complex.
