Abstract: The synthesis and analysis of a family of chelating ligands containing N-guanidinyl functional groups is reported. Optimal reaction time, metal complexation, and competitive metal binding are monitored using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Structures for an array of ligand species and their corresponding coordination complexes with transition metals in the +2 oxidation state are proposed.
