Abstract: Oxidation reactions are frequently used in industry and in organic synthesis. Using dioxygen (O2) for these reactions would be efficient and clean and thus would be economically and scientifically valuable. Reacting O2 with organic molecules requires catalytic aid. Guanidine and Schiff base functional groups were used in the synthesis of metal coordinating ligands, with the goal of creating a species that promotes oxygen coordination to a metal center and oxygen activation. Guanidine and Schiff base groups offer steric control, hydrogen bonding possibilities, and they create a basic environment, which are characteristics that have been found to promote oxygen coordination. Ligand syntheses were successful, although purification has created challenges. Metallation experiments followed ligand syntheses. An early guanidine ligand did not have much metallation success, but later guanidine-Schiff base ligands create more favorable metal binding conditions. Successes and difficulties in ligand synthetic processes and metallation procedures are discussed in the body of this work, as well as, different analytical techniques for investigating synthetic products.
