Abstract: The main goal of this project has been to advance towards the synthesis of an analogue of the molecule betanin (a compound found in beets giving them their distinct deep purple color). Much work has been done in developing and improving an organic synthesis scheme that would allow our group to make such an analogue. The three main goals as of now are deprotecting an amine group, oxidizing a piperdone ring and replacing a semicarbazone with a proline. Although we are getting close to achieving these goals, problems with the deprotection step remained a roadblock.
