Abstract: Though several biological examples of dioxygen activating metal complexes exist, it has proven difficult to generate the noncovalent interactions necessary to stabilize the catalytic activity of synthetic metalloproteins. Previous research has suggested that urea-derived ligands that position hydrogen bond donors around metal sites effectively stabilize synthetic terminal oxo complexes. Relying heavily upon these findings, I synthesized the novel urea-derived ligand, 2- (N’-t-butyl)ureyl-N-o-phenyl-2(di(o-pyridylmethyl)amino) acetamide (or H2bufdpa) using a unique synthetic route. In addition, I synthesized the guanidine-derived ligand, N,N’- diisopropyl-N’’-2((dimethylamino)ethyl)guanidine. After characterizing this ligand, I obtained evidence to suggest that it effectively binds both iron(III) and cobalt(II) metals to form stable metal complexes.
