Abstract: Novel metal-binding pentadentate ligands were designed with the aim to facilitate hydrogen bonding environments similar to those found in naturally occurring O₂ activating and binding metalloproteins. The synthetic procedures for the ligands 2-(N’-tbutyl) ureyl-N-phenyl 2-(di(o-pyridylmethyl)amino)acetamide (H₂bufdpa) and 2-(N’-tbutyl) ureyl-N-phenyl 3-(di(o-yridylmethyl)amino)propanamide (H₂bufdpp) were developed. The literature yields for (bis-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amino)-acetic acid and 3- (bis-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amino)-propionic acid were improved upon and the synthesis of N-(2-Amino-phenyl)-2-(bis-pyridin-2-ylmethyl-amino)-acetamide was achieved in low yield.
