Abstract:
|
During the 19th-century, Spanish society suffered from a growing loss of national character. The literature of the time reflects this lack of a cohesive national identity felt by many. Miguel de Unamuno, in his group of essays entitled En torno al casticismo, explains his views on the best course for the regeneration of Spain. He presents the idea that the national character does not live in the historia, or superficial manifestations of everyday life, but instead in the eternal intra-historia. In this work, his interpretation is applied to the poem La tierra de Alvargonzalez by another author of the time period Antonio Machado. |
