Abstract
This work deals with the issue of peace in Northern Ireland. It looks at the history of the conflict in Northern Ireland, dating back to the first British invasions in the 16th Century. This history sets up the background for the conflict in order to gain a full understanding of the events that have led to this drastically divided society. After this paper sets up the history of the conflict, it examines the Good Friday Agreement and the most recent attempt at peace in Northern Ireland. It does this by looking at the main points of the Agreement and what it hopes to accomplish. Next, this work points out the main obstacles that have thus far developed in the Peace Process. Finally, the Agreement will be analyzed in light of the history and the obstacles, pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of the Agreement and making recommendations for what could be done better.
