Abstract
Conflict is a major theme in the histories of both Northern Ireland and South Africa. The two situations share similarities in the discrimination and violence that have left permanent scars on the ego of all actors involved. Whereas South Africa has created an environment conducive to reform, Northern Ireland continues to be an intransigent conflict. South Africa has made great strides to create a forum in which divergent perspectives can be heard and the pain and insecurities that have been endured can be legitimated. Pacts can then be made that allow cross-cutting compromises on difficult issues. Northern Ireland must pool political will in order to force a catalyst that can promote an environment similar to South Africa's that is conducive to substantive change.
