Abstract: We constantly learn from and are seduced by the moving image. This process as it occurs in fiction film is often bound up in the politicization of desire--the desire that is propagated by certain kinds of images. Showgirls is a film where we expect to experience one thing and actually go through something else, which is a pleasure of passionate detachment rather than the pleasure of seeing a beautiful woman.
