Abstract: The purpose of the present research was to examine the effects of certain social factors and nonverbal behaviors on the perception of deception. This study extends previous literature by examining the effects of response latency, speaker gender, type of lie, and perceived relationship between two conversational partners on perceivers' judgments of truths versus lies. Participants listened to a naturalistic conversation between a male and female speaker, portrayed as to vary in relationship distance, that contained responses to questions that differed in the potential type of lie and response latency. Results revealed 1) gender differences in the frequency and type of lie told, 2) perceivers' attention to response latency, and 3) the impact of expectations on the interpretation of response latency for different relationship types.
