| Abstract: | Despite massive deindustrialization, manufacturing still continues to play a vital role in Philadelphia’s economy. This thesis utilizes case studies in the city’s printing and food manufacturing industries to explore challenges that industry faces in a city attempting to position itself in a global knowledge and service economy. Specifically, this work seeks to explain reasons why some firms survived the process of deindustrialization, while others did not. A variety of indicators are used to construct hypotheses as to why some firms are able to succeed within the city of Philadelphia. These hypotheses are then evaluated and abstracted to provide a set of conclusions and policy recommendations with the intent of helping to retain current city manufacturing operations. |
