Abstract:
|
This paper explores the impact of the economy on professional sports attendance for the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball. Building off of previous attendance analysis, this study hopes to address the popular topic of whether teams observe are impacted by fluctuations in the national and global economies. Using OLS regression analysis, 90 teams were analyzed over varying periods from 1951-2008. Included in the analysis are variables which help determine the regular attendance for sporting events as well as economic indicators to measure the effect the economy has upon sports demand. Though many of the economic indicators were found to be statistically insignificant, a few variables did yield interesting correlations. Further analysis on larger data sets may finally answer this issue. |
