Abstract
Several experiments in the past have attempted to demonstrate metacognitive abilities in animals such as pigeons and monkeys. One such experiment was performed by Smith, Schull and Washburn (1992). They designed an experiment which presented subjects with a stimulus ranging along a one-dimensional continuum. The subject was given three choices, one of which was to be used as a "bailout" response for stimuli for which the subject was aware of his or her own uncertainty. Monkeys and humans seemed to use this third response properly. Their work was further investigated by Haas in 1992. Haas attempted to generate a computer simulation of the metacognitive processes involved, but was unsuccessful. This work investigates some of the underlying assumptions of Smith, Schull and Washburn, and of Haas.
