Abstract
The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of congruent and incongruent face/voice information on impression formation. Participants were asked to provide a series of trait ratings on a set of (in)congruent face/voice pairs that varied along the dimensions of maturity (mature, babyish) and attractiveness (attractive, unattractive). As predicted, the results showed congruently attractive stimuli to be rated significantly more positive than unattractive stimuli in trustworthiness, health, likeability, emotional stability, and intelligence. In addition, voice was found to have a stronger impact on positive impression formation than face among all traits except health. Maturity did not produce significant effects. Future studies may focus on the difference between the impact of the face and the voice when presented simultaneously, as well as ascertaining what traits are affected by maturity.
