Abstract
This thesis seeks to present those circumstances in which prostitution would be
beneficial to the Greek state and thus acceptable. The three case studies will be Solon’s
brothels, Corinthian temple prostitutes, and Locrian maidens. The examples from the case
studies vary from temple prostitutes who stimulate trade in Corinth to virginal prostitutes
in Locri. The prostitutes support institutions in the state that assist in the future success
and continual growth of the city-state. This study will present an in-depth examination of
the exceptions in prostitution that allowed it to be acceptable. This will reveal how the Greeks may have viewed women, sexuality, commerce, and prostitution in the
community.
