Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to review previous research on different work motivation theories. Goal setting, Expectancy and Social Cognitive theories are reviewed in order to understand the multifaceted nature of motivation. The literature suggests that setting hard, specific goals, believing that one's efforts will lead to valued outcomes, being autonomous in work behavior and having supportive leaders with high expectations lead to higher work motivation, which in turn leads to greater productivity. At the conclusion of this paper, an ideal leader and work environment is proposed along with a new way to think about employee management.
