Abstract
Carr Everbach has taught Engineering at Swarthmore for 24 years. His course ENVS 2: "Human Nature, Technology, and the Environment" examines the ways environment spurs development of technologies, and, conversely, the ways technologies affect the environment. Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas and oil is following the trajectory of many previous technologies, with similar unintended consequences.
