Abstract
Girolamo Savonarola was a friar born in Ferrara, Italy in 1452. During his lifetime he became a preacher and prophet for the city of Florence in Tuscany. While there is a great deal of research on his life, very little of it has been devoted to understanding the close relationship between his work as a prophet and his political agenda. It is the argument of this thesis that his prophetic identity shaped the structure of Florentine society from 1494 to his death in 1498. Close analysis of his sermons and his Compendium of Revelations are included within this piece. Savonarola's prophecy propelled him to great heights of popularity, but it was also crucial to his demise.
