Abstract
Listening to Lives is a study of the narratives of the elderly in an old age apartment complex in South Philadelphia. Using the literature of key anthropologists on narratives and old age, I identified common themes throughout the narratives I collected in Mt. Sinai apartment complex and used those themes to illuminate the ways in which an individual views and constructs his or her life through narrative. With recorded individual interviews, as well as participant observation--playing bingo, chatting with groups of residents, attending parties--I was able to compile the various components of the personalities and lives of my informants in order to shape a more cohesive analysis.
